2024 Trek 100 – Third Coast Athletic Club

There’s something uniquely exhilarating about participating in the Trek 100, an event that brings together cyclists from all over to ride 100 miles for a great cause. This year marked the third consecutive year that my cycling team, Third Coast Athletic Club, took on this challenge. What began with just three of us has blossomed into a formidable group of seven, each rider bringing their own story, strength, and spirit to the team. Despite the rain, cold, and challenging conditions, we persevered and had an unforgettable experience.

This is before the rain. Smiles were rare after this. Bring on the van.

Our journey began three years ago with just three cyclists, each with a shared love for the sport and a commitment to push our limits. This year, as we lined up at the start, our team of seven reflected our growth and unity. Each new member brought a fresh dynamic to the group, creating a rich tapestry of experiences and camaraderie that fueled our collective determination.

This year’s Trek 100 presented us with particularly tough weather: relentless rain and a biting cold that made every mile feel longer. As we pedaled through the downpour, the chill seeped into our bones, and our fingers and toes felt numb. Yet, it was precisely these harsh conditions that underscored the strength and resilience of our team. We rode not just against the elements but alongside them, embracing the challenge as a testament to our dedication.

Cold or just four cold dudes?

One of our main goals this year was to ride on our own, without relying on the draft of other teams. In cycling, drafting—or sitting on the wheel of another rider—can significantly reduce wind resistance and conserve energy. However, we wanted to prove to ourselves that we could maintain our pace and stamina independently, relying solely on our collective strength and strategy.

Throughout the 100 miles, we kept a steady formation, ensuring that everyone stayed together. Communication was key; we signaled obstacles, encouraged each other, and shared the workload at the front. This unity and coordination were not just about completing the ride but about proving our team’s capability and cohesion. Despite the relentless weather, we managed to keep everyone together from start to finish, a testament to our teamwork and mutual support.

In previous years, rest stops were a highlight—an opportunity to refuel, stretch, and enjoy a brief respite from the saddle. However, the cold rain this year made prolonged stops impractical. Our teeth chattered, and our muscles stiffened whenever we paused. To combat the cold, we kept our stops brief, just long enough to grab a quick snack or drink before getting back on our bikes. This relentless pace added to the challenge, but it also emphasized our resilience and determination to push through discomfort.

Despite the tough conditions, or perhaps because of them, this year’s Trek 100 was particularly memorable. We laughed through the rain, encouraged each other up the hills, and shared stories that will become part of our team’s lore. Each member of the Third Coast Athletic Club displayed remarkable endurance and spirit, qualities that turned a challenging ride into a cherished adventure.

As we crossed the finish line together, soaked and shivering but smiling, we were already talking about next year’s event. The Trek 100 has become more than just a ride for us; it’s a symbol of our growth, camaraderie, and shared passion for cycling. We look forward to each new year, knowing that no matter the weather or challenges, we will face them together, stronger and more united than ever.

Here’s to the great times we’ve had and to many more miles of adventure ahead. See you on the road next year!
